To conduct a comprehensive accessibility audit of Colchester Makerspace to identify areas of strength, areas for improvement, and develop a prioritised action plan for enhancing accessibility.
Background:
Colchester Makerspace is a not-for-profit, community-driven workshop and creative space that provides members with access to tools, technology, and resources to engage in various making activities in ceramics and printmaking. We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome and can participate fully, regardless of their abilities.
Scope of Work:
We are undertaking some research and looking to commission an advisor to:
Conduct an on-site accessibility audit:
Evaluate the physical space, including entrances, exits, work areas, restrooms, and common areas, for compliance with accessibility standards.
Assess equipment and tools for usability by people with diverse needs.
Review website and online resources for accessibility compliance.
Consider programmatic accessibility, including workshops, events, and communication practices.
Identify and document existing accessible features and practices.
Identify and prioritise areas for improvement:
Categorise accessibility issues by severity and urgency.
Provide detailed recommendations for remediation, including specific solutions and assistive technologies.
Consider both short-term and long-term solutions.
Develop a costed action plan:
Estimate costs (at high level) associated with recommended improvements.
Explore potential funding sources and resources, including grants, sponsorships, and community partnerships.
Provide guidance on phasing in improvements based on budget and priorities.
Facilitate the development of an Access Statement:
Collaborate with Colchester Makerspace to create an informative Access Statement.
Ensure the statement accurately reflects the current accessibility status and future plans for improvement.
Adhere to legal requirements and best practices for Access Statements.
Deliverables:
Audit report: Detailing findings, prioritised recommendations, and costed action plan.
Access Statement: A clear and concise document outlining accessibility provisions at Colchester Makerspace.
Consultant Qualifications:
Proven experience conducting accessibility audits for similar organisations.
Knowledge of accessibility standards and regulations (e.g., Equality Act 2010).
Strong understanding of assistive technologies and inclusive design principles.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
