How would you describe what you do?
As a passionate mixed media artist, I find immense joy in exploring the harmonious relationship between nature and architecture. My artistic journey is a continuous exploration of different techniques, allowing me to weave my personal touch into every piece I create. One of my greatest loves is botanical drawing. There's something incredibly fulfilling about capturing the intricate details of leaves, flowers and stems. I often spend hours outdoors, sketching and photographing plants directly from nature. This practice not only helps me observe the subtle changes in form and colour but also deepens my connection with the environment.
How did you get started in art/design?
I am an artist who has embraced a creative transformation after decades in the business world. My family encouraged me to pursue a more traditional career path but, although successfully running my own companies for 35 years, it was never my passion. Throughout that time, I dedicated evenings and weekends to honing my skills through night school classes and workshops, finding solace and inspiration in the artistic process.
Two years ago, I made a bold life change by selling my business to concentrate on art. With a love for printing, painting and mixed media, I’m now focused on creating fabric designs and art that reflects an appreciation for botanicals and beauty of nature. This new chapter allows for a deeper exploration of creation.
What makes your work and/or process unique?
My processes are unique because I approach artistic techniques with a spirit of experimentation and innovation. I constantly look for ways to tweak and elevate different methods, pushing the boundaries of traditional practices. I often iterate on a single print design up to 50 times before I'm fully satisfied with the outcome, reflecting my dedication to perfection.
Rather than conforming to how others might approach a technique, I focus on creating work that resonates with me personally. This leads me to explore alternative pathways and develop my own distinct style. My self-taught background drives me to delve into various techniques, continually learning/evolving as an artist. This commitment to exploring and innovating allows my work to stand out, as I prioritize my creative vision and the joy of the artistic journey above all else.
What tips would you give to someone interested in starting what you do?
If you're interested in pursuing a creative path like mine, my key advice would be to immerse yourself in the process. Here’s some tips:
1. Explore the Makerspace: Where you can access tools and resources, meet like-minded individuals and collaborate on projects. These community spaces are great for hands-on experience and inspiration.
2. Practice Regularly: Make a commitment to practice your craft as often as possible. The more you create, the more you'll refine your skills and develop your unique style.
3. Learn Continuously: Take advantage of resources available to you. Read books, watch tutorials and attend workshops to expand your knowledge and skills. There's always something new to learn!
4. Embrace Mistakes: Don't be afraid to make mistakes. They are a crucial part of the creative process and can lead to unexpected discoveries and breakthroughs.
5. Network and Collaborate: Connect with other artists and creatives. Engaging with a community can provide support, feedback and opportunities for collaboration that can enhance your work.
6. Stay Open-Minded: Be willing to experiment and step outside your comfort zone. Sometimes, the most exciting ideas come from trying something completely new.
As for finding your ‘thing’, it's a journey that often requires patience and exploration. What you create may evolve over time, and it's perfectly fine if you haven't found your niche yet. Keep experimenting and trust that the process will lead you to your unique artistic voice.
What made you feel like, "yes this is something I want in my life”?
My journey toward embracing art and creativity has roots in my upbringing. Growing up in a difficult environment pushed me to seek out groups and classes as a refuge. It was in those moments that I discovered my love for the creative process. From a young age, I experimented with various art forms, finding joy in the act of creation, even if I wasn’t always skilled at everything I tried.
As an adult, this desire to create has shaped my home into a special sanctuary, filled with pieces I’ve made or upcycled, reflecting my unique style and imagination. It’s a space where I feel safe and inspired, and that environment is vital for my creative expression.
Two years ago, when I made the leap to change my career path and fully commit to art and creativity, it felt like coming home. It was a culmination of my lifelong passion and a decision that resonated deeply with who I am. Embracing this new direction has been one of the best choices I’ve ever made, allowing me to channel my experiences into meaningful creations and fostering a sense of fulfilment that I had long sought. Every moment spent creating reaffirms my commitment to this path and solidifies the feeling that this is where I truly belong.
If you have creative block where do you get inspiration?
Through various avenues, such as workshops, where the energy of fellow creatives can reignite my passion. Meeting other artists and engaging in chats about their experiences provides fresh perspectives and ideas.
I also turn to my big collection of books, which offer insights and techniques that spark my creativity. Scrolling through Instagram can be a rich source of inspiration; exploring the stories and ideas shared by others helps me see things from different angles.
Despite sometimes feeling overwhelmed by the many ideas swirling in my head, I use these moments to refocus and reign myself in. The mix of interacting with others, reading and exploring online allows me to break through creative blocks and reconnect with my artistic vision.
Where do you see yourself in the future with this journey? Do you want this to be long term?
I envision myself continually improving and expanding my creative skills while launching a fabric range. This initiative will allow me to incorporate my unique fabrics into the products I sell, creating a cohesive, personal connection between my art and the final goods.
I want this journey to be long-term, as I am deeply passionate about the creative process and excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. My goal is not only to develop my fabric designs further but also to build a brand that reflects my artistic vision and celebrates the beauty of nature and creativity. I aspire to foster a community around my work, sharing my journey with others and inspiring fellow creatives along the way. Ultimately, I see this path as a fulfilling, lifelong pursuit that continues to challenge and inspire me.
Is there another artist/maker that you admire?
I admire a vast array of artists and makers, too many to mention individually, as my spectrum of interests spans from fine art to abstract forms. I appreciate the courage it takes for anyone to share their creative work, as it often reflects deep personal experiences and a significant investment of time and effort.
What inspires me most is the diversity of expression found within the art community. Each artist brings a unique perspective and technique, enriching the creative landscape. I find motivation in those who push boundaries, experiment fearlessly and convey their stories through their work. Their willingness to be vulnerable and showcase their "thing" not only resonates with me but also encourages me to explore my own creativity without limits. Every artist's journey reminds me of the power of creativity to inspire, connect and uplift the creator and the audience.
Are there any exciting events/projects/experiences soon?
I’ve recently begun entering exhibitions, which has been a completely exhilarating experience for me. Initially, I had doubts about whether I was good enough, but I've found the process to be incredibly rewarding and exciting. Each event has allowed me to share my work with others and connect with a broader community.
In addition to these, I plan to host a few intimate workshops at my home. These aim to create a welcoming space for meeting new friends and like-minded individuals who share a passion for creativity. I’m looking forward to fostering connections and inspiring others through these experiences. I see these upcoming events and projects as great opportunities for growth, connection and exploration of my artistic journey.
