How would you describe what you do?
I am first and foremost an illustrator and storyteller, using whatever medium is speaking to me at the time. Currently I am focused primarily on ceramics and printmaking.
How did you get started in art/design?
Whenever I am asked this my first thought is always of the days I spent creating in my Granny's shed. This involved lots of painting, sculpting and following Art Attack books! I am grateful that I had access to lots of fun art supplies from an early age; it definitely sparked my creativity and fondness for experimenting with new materials. I then went to UCA Canterbury to do a Foundation degree in Art and Design followed by an Illustration and Animation degree. I learnt a lot at uni, primarily from my peers. This meant, after I dropped out in late 2021, I felt lost without my creative community, which lead me straight to Colchester Makerspace :)
What makes your work and/or process unique?
I often refer to my work as impulsive, loose and intuitive. Creative energy comes to me in waves, often manifesting in a desperate urge to make something RIGHT NOW! If I'm lucky, and this motivation comes at an opportune time, it can result in a piece of work born of passion and urgency after 5-8 hours of hyper-fixation. Other times the idea goes on the BIG LIST that I keep on my phone, that has hundreds of ideas for me to pick from when I need inspiration. I like the humour of my work and also how each piece can tell a story; be it a screen printed poster in honour of an old internet meme, or a ceramic pot with the scribblings of someone desperate to be let down the big red scaffolding chute.
What tips would you give to someone interested in starting what you do?
Draw lots. Engage with art around you - be it in a gallery, at a concert or looking at something creative a friend has done. Creating takes practice, not just developing physical skills but training your brain to pick up on the ideas you have, and commit to them. Something that stuck with me from uni was always having a notebook on you or just a way to document things around you.
What made you feel like, "yes this is something I want in my life”?
For me, creating is a necessity. I get itchy if I haven’t drawn in a long time. Even if I’m not creating everyday, I am always thinking about it and when I can next get down to Makerspace to burn a screen or throw on the wheel.
If you have creative block where do you get inspiration?
Pinterest, my BIG LIST, friends, old work, or loosening up with new method or project, hence my long list of wips.
Where do you see yourself in the future with this journey? You want this to be long term?
I know I will always be creating. I just take each day as it comes and I'm looking forward to any creative opportunities that come my way.
Is there another artist/maker that you admire?
I love artists like David Shrigley, who have the loose, sketchy style that I feel I often bring to my illustrations. My favourite artist at the moment, however, is c8ty on TikTok. She specialises in sustainable fashion and creates clothing that is often humorous and unique.
Are there any exciting events/projects/experiences soon?
My next market will be at the Minories on the 8th and 9th of February. I am also interested in making more video content of my creative process for TikTok, Instagram, and, soon, some more long form content on YouTube. An Etsy shop is also in the works.
Why is Colchester Makerspace important to you/your work?
Ever since joining Colchester Makerspace I’ve really valued the community and have made great friends whose work inspires me. Having other creatives in my life was something I missed after leaving university, so I really value the insight and passion of the other members at the space. It’s also really valuable to have somewhere I can access 24/7 for when creativity strikes.
Some of Charlie’s pieces will be on display and available to buy from Friday 14th February - next door in the neighbouring restaurant Patch. Please ensure you are onsite when placing order.
